WEEK 2

On the 29th we had an interesting discussion on the essay written by Manovich. A lot of the points in the essay made perfect sense and began to link up thoughts and ideas I had previously before the elective.

Strategy and tactic are used on a daily basis, Manovich uses example of subcultures (something I have also been interested in) and how companies present items for the consumer (strategy) and the buyer then goes on to make their own decisions with how they wear it (tactic). I agree with the Manovich because in subculture there is a need to remix and be creative with items you have and this is linked with the 'city' explained in the essay, you are given a 'map' with the roads you can go to find your destination but the consumer tends to take shortcuts, find a quicker way to reach the place you want to find.

I feel art can still expand beyond web 2.0 however, I don't particularly like the fact that there is a possibility there might be a virtual gallery or things will become too internet based. This reminds me of the decreasing use of the library, there is now devices where you can get a book inside a game for a nintendo ds or the amazon kindle where you can a number of books at a click of a button. What happened to holding a book or the excitement of going to a library or bookshop to select a book you want to read. The internet and devices will open a lot of opportunities but will they be for the better, I don't know.

The development of softwares and copyright has good and bad aspects. The good points are that the possibilities are endless so there is room for something new that will move creativity further but the down side is copyrighting your input will be become difficult, some sites have the right to use your content as their own and that will individuality will be lost and there will might not be a way of protecting yourself. There are obviously flaws within the internet and they should be fixed, otherwise it could come crashing down.

In response to Manovich's last statement ‘ The real challenge may lie in the dynamics of Web 2.0 culture – its constant innovation, its energy, and its unpredictability.’
I feel there will able always be a hype during the use of web 2.0 and people's input will generate other ideas to extend it further, we will have to wait and see what will become of 2.0..
